THE FACILITY

Finnish Sauna & Infrared Sauna in Altrincham

RE:UP has two saunas at 20 Huxley Street, Broadheath — a traditional Finnish sauna and an infrared sauna. Both are included in every session. Use one, use both, or alternate between them — the 90 minutes is yours.

SAUNA 1

Finnish Sauna

Dry heat sauna with a stove and heated stones. The stove heats the room to 80–90°C. You can ladle water onto the stones to create short bursts of steam.

Suits those who want intense, traditional sauna heat. Core temperature rises quickly.

SAUNA 2

Infrared Sauna

Infrared panels heat your body directly rather than the air around you. Ambient temperature sits at 50–60°C — noticeably cooler than a Finnish sauna, though you still sweat heavily.

Often preferred by people who find conventional saunas too intense, or who want a longer, more gradual session.

WHAT IT DOES

Sauna benefits: what regular use does for the body

Core temperature rises, circulation increases

Blood vessels dilate in response to the heat, increasing blood flow to muscles and skin.

Heart rate increases to a moderate-exercise level

The cardiovascular system responds to the heat similarly to how it responds to light physical activity.

Sweating begins within minutes

This is the body's natural cooling mechanism — sweat evaporates from the skin to bring temperature down.

Core temperature drops after the session

The cooling-down effect after leaving the sauna is something many people find helps them sleep that evening.

Muscles relax in the heat

Many people notice reduced stiffness the day after a training session when they use the sauna shortly after.

Regular use is associated with lower perceived stress

Consistent practitioners frequently report a reduction in perceived stress over weeks of regular use.

CONTRAST THERAPY

Sauna & ice bath — better together

The sauna is the heat half of a contrast therapy session. Most RE:UP members combine it with our two cold plunge ice baths — alternating between heat and cold in repeated cycles. The temperature shift drives a vascular pump effect that accelerates recovery in a way neither the sauna nor the ice bath achieves alone.

You can use the sauna on its own — plenty of members do. But the majority who started sauna-only now do full contrast sessions. The difference in how you feel afterwards is noticeable from the first time you combine them.

Who uses the sauna at RE:UP

Altrincham FC, Bowdon RUFC & local clubs

Altrincham & District AC & Altrincham Velo

Runners from Altrincham & District AC (based at the Timperley track) and cyclists from Altrincham Velo use it weekly after long runs or hard training blocks. Heat and cold on the same day is common.

Gym-goers

Office workers

Using it 1–2 times a week for stress relief and sleep. The sauna-cold contrast tends to produce a calm, tired feeling in the evening.
